Classical Weekend: Torleif Thedéen and Marianna Shirinyan

Torleif Thedéen is one of the Nordic region's foremost cellists and has for several decades had an extensive international career as a soloist and chamber musician. Marianna Shirinyan is considered one of Europe's most sought-after pianists, known for her virtuosic playing and great musical sensitivity.
This evening, they will play works by, among others, Dmitri Shostakovich, Samuel Barber, and Richard Strauss.

Welcome to a concert with Torleif Thedéen and Marianna Shirinyan!

The Swedish cellist Torleif Thedéen is considered one of the Nordic region’s foremost instrumentalists and has an extensive international career as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and pedagogue. He has won several international cello competitions, including the Pablo Casals International Cello Competition. Thedéen is a Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Music in London and a professor at Norges musikkhøgskole.

For more than forty years, he has played with leading orchestras and collaborated with conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Paavo Järvi, and Osmo Vänskä. As a chamber musician, he has performed on stages such as Wigmore Hall and Carnegie Hall, and at festivals such as Prague Spring and the Verbier Festival.

His recordings have received a number of awards, including the Edison Award for Quartet for the End of Time by Olivier Messiaen.

Thedéen plays a cello from 1783 by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, on loan from Dextra Musica. The instrument previously belonged to Mstislav Rostropovich.

In this concert, he plays together with the pianist Marianna Shirinyan.

The Danish-Armenian pianist Marianna Shirinyan is considered one of Europe’s most creative and sought-after pianists today. She is active both as a soloist and a chamber musician, and is known for her virtuosic playing, tonal nuances, and great musical sensitivity.

She has received several awards, including the P2 Prize from Danmarks Radio, the Critics’ Prize from Danske Musikkritikere, and the Carl Nielsen Prize. She is a sought-after guest at international festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival and Festspillene i Bergen.

As a soloist, she has played with orchestras such as Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Oslo-Filharmonien, and Göteborgs Symfoniker, and collaborated with conductors such as Lawrence Foster and Thomas Søndergård.

Shirinyan also has an extensive and critically acclaimed discography. She is a professor at Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium and a guest professor at Norges musikkhøgskole. In the 2025–2026 season, she is “Artist in Residence” with Aarhus Symfoniorkester.

  • Concert, 3-course dinner in Ridderstuen ca. 15 minutes after the concert and accommodation with breakfast, on Rosendal Avlsgård & Fruehus (the most used room has a sink, whereas shared shower and toilet are in the hallway).

Please write which tickets the transfer is payment for.

Most likely problems:

  • If the Continue button is grey, normally the required fields have not been filled in properly. The most common mistake is phone number with space in the end or some other sign. Please try 00000000 (just 8 zeros) to be able to move on. We still have your email address for shipping your tickets.
  • No printer at home? No email received? No worries, as long as the purchase is OK (money has actually left your account), you are on our lists. Just tell us which email address was used for the purchase, and we will find your order.
  • The event might be sold out even if the home page button is not updated with "sold out". The appearing message "Beklager utsolgt" means "Sorry, sold out". You may send an email to info@baroniet.no to be in a waiting list. In case of extra tickets we will handle the waiting list in the order of time and date on the emails.
  • Some banks have added extra security on Internet shopping. It is then required to log on to the Internet bank to approve the purchase.
  • If your computer is set up with the wrong date, a common certificate error message will appear. Just ignore and move on.
