Kvinnherad
kyrkje is sometimes called Kvinnherad Cathedral because it is one of the most
beautiful medieval churches in Norway. It was built of stone in 1250, and was
one of the four main churches in Hordaland. This means that Rosendal was a wealthy
and important centre for christendom. The alter is also made of stone with a
slot carved out for containing reliquies, one of many memories of catholic times.
The church was owned by Baroniet from 1678 to 1910, and Baroniet was responsible
for the restoring and decor during this time. The ceiling is covered with stars,
moons and suns to give the congregation the impression of sitting under God's
sky. In 1670 the Rosenkrantz burial chamber was built, and it is still intact,
containing some beautiful sarcofagus.
The alterpiece was painted by Hans Sager in 1705 on comission from baron Axel
Rosenkrantz and shows the communion, the crucifixtion and the resurrection.
The guided tour lasts for 20-30 minutes. The church is open for guided tours
in the main season, and for groups by appointment.
